Evaluation of Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control Using Advanced Communication Infrastructure
Advancements in the field of ethernet based communication protocols as well as power electronics have significantly improved the methodologies used for keeping the power grid highly efficient and reliable, despite the increase in complexity and highly meshed power systems in recent decades. Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) has emerged as an important tool to analyze the stability of highly meshed and complex power networks while allowing to take corrective measures in case of disturbances or changes in system dynamics that exceed permissible thresholds. Real-time simulations allow to test these methodologies rigorously in a controlled environment, hence saving both time and money. This paper discusses the existing studies done on the development of WAMPAC, along with providing a real-time demonstration of it.
