From mine reclamation to geo-heritage tourism: assessing stakeholder perceptions and sustainable practices at barr conglomerate, Pali, Rajasthan, India

This study examines the potential and transformative impact of stakeholder collaboration in the reclamation of the Barr Conglomerate mine site in Pali, Rajasthan, India—a stunning geological feature with high geo-heritage tourism (GHT) value. Following the lessons of recent efforts to address site-specific issues, the study is focused on the shift from active mining to reclamation with specific emphasis on reducing the environmental impacts and fostering sustainable development. The reclamation process entails the restoration of land, water management, and ecosystem repair to restore ecological balance effectively. Involvement with stakeholders, including the local people, environmental scientists, government agencies, and industry players, makes the process transparent, builds confidence, and consolidates various opinions in the reclamation process. The result shows significant environmental improvement and benefits to the local people, such as increased biodiversity, better water quality, and more local participation. The results encourage the practice of sustainable land use, including agriculture, forestry, and renewable energy, which may be beneficial to local economic development. In addition, the study suggests potential for GHT to capitalize on the geological peculiarity of the site, offering other sources of income and increasing awareness of environmental protection. The reclamation project of the Barr Conglomerate offers a good lesson in the good care of the environment and integrated development, which can serve as an example to other similar projects around the world. This study emphasizes the necessity of involving all stakeholders to achieve balanced and sustainable results in reclamation at a mine.
