Site-specific substitution in the structure of Ni2Zn11 by the coinage metals (<i>Cn</i> = Ag and Au) to alter the magnetism
The factors influencing the site preference of Ni in the structure of Ni2Zn11 (<i>I</i>4̄3<i>m</i>) are discussed in this study. The insertion of the coinage metals (<i>Cn</i> = Ag and Au) in the structure of the ternary Ni-Zn-<i>Cn γ</i>-brass system is site-specific, and this site specificity of nonmagnetic <i>Cn</i> surprisingly modifies the magnetic behaviour. While Ni2Zn11 shows diamagnetic behavior, Ni2Zn10.25<i>Cn</i>0.75 exhibits itinerant electron paramagnetism.
