Generative artificial intelligence and organizational learning: a systematic literature review

Purpose The aim of this study synthesizes the current state of knowledge on the importance of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) for organizational learning (OL) across all three learning levels. Additionally, based on the 4I model of OL, a conceptual multilevel model was proposed that considers GenAI and the complexity of OL. This study also provides observations to deepen understanding and direct future research in this regard. Design/methodology/approach This study provides a systematic review of the empirical literature obtained using two search strategies: (1) a search of two databases –Web of Science and Scopus and (2) the snowballing technique. In total, 138 scientific articles were analyzed using descriptive analysis and hybrid thematic analysis. Findings The results established that the importance of GenAI for OL is a new and rapidly developing area. A vast part of previous work is conceptual in nature, while empirical work has always been interdisciplinary at the intersection of management, technology, and human resources management and it was conducted in English-speaking countries. The study revealed the importance of GenAI for OL across all three learning levels and provides a conceptual multilevel model which considers GenAI and the complexity of OL. The study provided guidance for future development of knowledge on OL driven by GenAI. Originality/value The study presents a novel contribution by being the first systematic literature review that investigates the impact of GenAI for organizational learning across all three learning levels and provides a model that is based on existing research into GenAI and its importance for OL.
