Molecular characterization of BMP15 and BMPR-IB genes in Algerian D’man and Ouled Djellal sheep populations, using RFLP-PCR and AS-PCR techniques
Background: In Algeria, the sheep farming industry provides a crucial source of red meat. However, to meet the growing domestic demand, improvements in flock prolificacy are required. Aim: To investigate polymorphisms in the BMP15 and BMPR1B genes in two Algerian sheep breeds, D’man and Ouled Djellal, in order to identify their potential influence on prolificacy. Methods: The genotyping techniques PCR-RFLP and allele-specific PCR were used to examine the FecXI and FecXBar mutations in the BMP15 gene, and the FecBB mutation in the BMPR1B gene. Results: The genetic analysis failed to reveal these mutations in the Algerian sheep populations studied. Conclusions: This finding underscores the need to explore other genetic factors, including known or novel mutations, which could potentially affect prolificacy in these local sheep breeds. By identifying other factors, specific markers could be developed for more targeted breeding programs. This could open new avenues for research and improve our understanding of the genetic basis of prolificacy in Algerian sheep breeds.
