Irrigation Period and some Corn (<i>Zea mays</i> L.) Varieties and their Effect on Productivity Under the Center Pivot Sprinkler Irrigation System
Abstract To decrease the amount of water consumed for irrigation in a way that keep an acceptable amount of corn crop yield; a field experiment was conducted in a sandy loam soil at AL-Hamidhiah research station, One of the research stations affiliated with the College of Agriculture - University of Anbar - Ramadi in the fall of 2023, to study the effect of irrigation scheduling (3, 5, 7) days on five local varieties of yellow corn, namely Al-Fajr, Al-Maha, Al-Safa, Buhooth 106, and Sara. Buhooth 106 variety was more efficient in giving the highest grain yield per corn cob, 137.20 g. Likewise, AlFajer and Sara varieties gave a grain yield of 124.80 and 117.47 g, respectively. The 3-day irrigation period resulted in the highest grain yield of 140.20 grams, compared to the 5- and 7-day irrigation treatments, which increased by 17.05% and 66%, respectively. Compared to the actual water requirement of corn in central Iraq, the result of the 5- and 7-day irrigation treatment was an acceptable and reliable amount in times of water scarcity.
