Geminivirus resistance and variation in DNA polymerase delta subunit 1 of diverse plant species
In many crop species an ongoing priority is the identification of loci that confer resistance to geminivirus pathogens.Recently, variation in DNA polymerase delta subunit 1 (POLD1) was identified under a geminivirus resistance quantitative trait locus (QTL) in both cassava and tomato as the source of resistance. From this, we undertook an analysis of published geminivirus resistance QTLs to identify those that contained POLD1, and where possible, identified the putative causal mutation.Further, a survey of whole genome resequencing projects of over 7,000 plant accessions identified additional putative novel resistance alleles in both dicot and monocot species.Together, these results demonstrate that variation in POLD1 underlies geminivirus resistance in a diverse set of plants, including cotton, soybean, squash, and maize.
