Investigation of Fault Ride-Through Strategies for Single-Phase PWM Rectifiers with Power Decoupling Capability

To minimize DC-side voltage ripple in power converters and enhance output power quality during sudden faults on the AC input side, this paper proposes a fault ride-through method for PWM rectifiers utilizing active power decoupling (APD). The proposed method allows energy stored in the decoupling capacitor to be fed back to the DC bus during short-term AC-side power interruptions, ensuring the stability of the DC bus voltage. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, this paper employs PLECS to model and simulate the control, power decoupling, and fault ride-through design of the PWM rectifier. The simulation results indicate that the PWM rectifier outperforms traditional rectifiers in terms of faster dynamic response and reduced overshoot. Moreover, the power decoupling design effectively suppresses secondary ripples on the DC output side, while the fault ride-through design ensures stable DC-side operation during short-term AC-side power interruptions.
