A Review and Analysis of Grid-Forming Technologies in Renewable Energy Power Systems
High renewable penetration poses challenges to grid stability, especially in low-inertia environments. In this scenario, grid-forming control gained increasing attention for improving voltage/frequency support capability. This paper focuses on the grid-forming control techniques, and systematically reviews the evolution of droop control, virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control, matching control, virtual oscillator control (VOC), and hybrid synchronous control (HSC). A comparison highlights each strategy’s unique benefits and drawbacks in enhancing stability and dynamic response. Finally, this review offers key insights for theoretical optimization and practical design of inverter control technologies in modern power systems.
