A Vertical Ultra-Thin Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) with Dual-Phase Integrated Inductor for High-Performance Computing Applications

As future high-performance computing systems trend toward requiring substantially higher power levels, vertical power delivery architectures have been recognized as a compelling solution for achieving next-generation power density specifications. This article presents the development of a vertical ultra-thin 6-1 V voltage regulator module (VRM) with dual-phase integrated inductor, achieving compact dimensions of 9 mm × 10 mm × 4.8 mm and demonstrating a remarkable power density of 180 W/cm3. The implemented design features per-phase operational parameters of 108 nH inductance and 40 A current capacity. Simulation analyses validate the module's enhanced electrical characteristics and thermal management capabilities, confirming its effectiveness in high-density power conversion applications. Experimental measurements of the prototype show a stable output voltage of 720 mV, though noticeable output current ripple persist.
