Reclaiming oral cancer medications to improve access: Early outcomes from a statewide CDR network.
102 Background: Cancer drug repositories (CDRs) allow individuals to donate eligible unused cancer medication that can be utilized for patients in need. CDRs have the potential to minimize cancer medication waste while improving medication access. Nationwide, implementation of cancer drug repository programs remains suboptimal. YesRx, a nonprofit charitable service organization, was founded in June 2023 in collaboration with the first 3 registered CDRs in Michigan to support healthcare partners in improving cancer medication access and decreasing waste. The YesRx Network was formed soon after in August 2023, with 9 founding partner sites to improve statewide access to CDR resources, particularly for those areas serving vulnerable patients and communities. We present a retrospective analysis describing the YesRx Network utilization outcomes to date. Methods: This retrospective analysis was conducted with statewide CDR data available since YesRx Network formation, August 2023 – May 2025. CDR donations received by the YesRx Network include the donor zip code, medication and quantity donated. CDR recipient information collected by the YesRx Network includes the recipients’ zip code, age range, cancer diagnosis, medication and quantity received. Medication dollar value was calculated utilizing the average wholesale price (AWP) of the medication for the year that it was donated or received. Results: In total, 1,379 individuals have donated medication and 1,000 patients have received, on average, a one-month supply of medication via the YesRx Network. Donations received were valued at 25,012,535 AWP and prescriptions dispensed at no cost to patients were valued at 15,521,489 AWP. Growth has continued since the Network launch in August 2023 (Table 1). Most patients who received prescriptions through the CDR were 65 years or greater (53%). Breast cancer (28%) was the most common diagnosis for CDR recipients, followed by leukemia (18%), lung cancer (12%), and prostate cancer (9%). Michiganders in rural zip-codes made up 41% of dispenses and 90% of Michigan counties received CDR resources by the completion of the 22-month period. Within 22-months, the YesRx Network expanded to 105 sites, including community sites, private practices, and academic centers. Conclusions: In 22 months, the YesRx CDR Network achieved an over 1,000% increase in site participation, enabling individuals to donate unopened/unused medications that would otherwise have been wasted, resulting in patients in need receiving over $15.5 million in cancer medication at no cost.
