Optimization of the pressure shaft for the PSW Limberg III

Abstract The Limberg III PSW expands the Kaprun‐Salzach power plant group operated by VERBUND Hydro Power GmbH (VHP) by an installed capacity of 480 MW in both pump and turbine operation. The project created an additional connection between the two annual storage reservoirs Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden, which have a combined storage capacity of 166 million m 3 . The headrace system leads via the intake tunnel to the Drossen valve chamber and from there via the headrace tunnel to the surge system. The adjoining pressure shaft overcomes a height difference of 374.6 m over a length of 562 m and leads into the headrace distribution conduit. The geometry of the lower surge chamber and the lining system of the pressure shaft were optimised in terms of construction operation and economic considerations. This paper highlights different aspects and draws a conclusion.
