Real-time Data Interpretation and Integration

Summary This paper presents a real-time data integration workflow that combines caliper measurements and along-string measurement (ASM) data to detect wellbore instabilities during drilling. By monitoring parameters such as borehole geometry, pressure, WOB, and torque, it is possible to identify cavings as they develop—well before they are visible at the surface. The use of high-bandwidth wired drill pipe enables continuous transmission of this data to surface advisory systems, providing drillers with early warning signs and improving response times. In addition to early detection, caliper-derived wellbore profiles are used to dynamically update lag depth calculations. Traditional methods assume a uniform borehole, which can lead to significant inaccuracies in long sections. Real-time geometry-based adjustments reduce this uncertainty, improving the precision of surface sample correlation and enhancing formation evaluation. This approach is further strengthened by integrating surface monitoring systems, such as shaker and sample catcher data, to cross-validate downhole events. The workflow is already deployed on the Norwegian Continental Shelf requires collaboration between stakeholders but offers a more complete and proactive understanding of subsurface conditions, leading to improved drilling safety, accuracy, and reservoir placement.
