The Power of Combining Downhole Fluid Analysis and Surface Logging Gas Data

Summary In this study we present a new, proprietary concept for integrating downhole fluid analysis and sampling (DFAS) and mud gas logging data to enhance reservoir insights in real-time. This approach enables faster decision-making for drilling and completion teams already while the well is being drilled. While conventional MGL gets the fluid sample form the rock that is crushed at the bit, the combination of DFAS and MGL allows a deeper look into the formation away from the wellbore. This is possible because the DFAS tool can pump fluid from the formation, through the tool into the annulus, which can then be analyzed at surface with the MGL equipment. Measurements from MGL and DFAS can be integrated and used to calibrate sensor data and related models in both directions, enhancing the overall informative value and certainty of fluid composition predictions in real-time. Because MGL provides a more detailed chemical analysis during the pump-out then the DFAS tool alone, the data can support decision making for which samples to prioritize for PVT-analysis at an onshore laboratory. The study emphasizes the value of service integration, and highlights that this can open new frontiers for subsurface fluid understanding already while the well is drilled.
