Argemone mexicana: A Traditional Healer’s Herb in the Age of Scientific Scrutiny

Argemone mexicana, commonly known as Mexican prickly poppy or Satyanashi, has long played a significant role in traditional medical systems worldwide. This review examines its ethnobotanical relevance, various pharmacological activities, and current scientific findings. A. mexicana contains isoquinoline alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenolics, which have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, antidiabetic, cytotoxic, nematicidal, wound-healing, anti-stress, and anti-fertility properties. Modern phytochemical investigations indicate bioactives such as berberine, sanguinarine, chelerythrine, and galanthamine, which contribute to its broad-spectrum medicinal potential. Traditional uses include treating skin infections, respiratory ailments, and liver illnesses, as well as controlling reproductive health and parasites. However, its medical usage is limited by toxicological concerns, particularly the seed oil’s link with epidemic dropsy and organ toxicity. To avoid these concerns, researchers are investigating green nanoparticle manufacturing and customised medication delivery methods. A. mexicana appears as a potential yet challenging medicinal herb. To fully achieve its potential, the emphasis is on dose standardisation, safety evaluations, and integrative research. In an age of increasing antibiotic resistance and the need for plant-based therapies, A. mexicana epitomises the synthesis of old knowledge and current pharmacological technology. Major Findings: Argemone mexicana shows medicinal promise, but toxicity limits its use; research focuses on safer applications via green nanoparticles and drug delivery.
