Study of Harmful Effects to Environment from Release of Polypropylene and Polystyrene into Atmosphere During Burning of Solid Domestic Waste

Utilization and complete neutralization of solid household waste is a complex hygienic problem, which is becoming more and more acute, especially in view of the growing urbanization. In many cases, sheet and packaging plastic is disposed after its use, however, due to its durability, such plastics are found everywhere and are stable in the environment. Research on the monitoring and impact of plastic waste is only emerging, and this represents a serious problem for environmental protection. For example, with the simultaneous burning of food and plastic waste, a toxic substance – dioxin – is formed. The article discusses the problems of increasing the amount of household waste, plastic pollution and its recycling. The study examined two different types of plastic. In the first part of the experiment, plastic samples were burned and air samples were taken. In the second part of the experiment, the composition of the air sample was analyzed using a gas chromatograph. The purpose of the research is to identify harmful compounds that are released into the atmosphere and into the environment during the burning of polypropylene and polystyrene
