Nicotinoyl gamma-aminobutyric acid nootropic therapy in adjuvant therapy of glaucoma optic neuropathy

Glaucoma optic neuropathy (GON) remains one of main causes of irreversible vision loss, and even target intraocular pressure does not always stabilize the neurodegenerative process. In this regard, strategies complying with principles of the 3P (predictive, preventive and personalized) medicine are of particular relevance. Importance of this approach is emphasized by frequent association of GON with various comorbidities including cerebrovascular disorders, anxiety-depressive disorders and cognitive dysfunction. In this context, the nicotinoyl gamma-aminobutyric acid-based drug is of particular interest, and its use can be considered as a personalized therapy, as it improves optic nerve perfusion, provides a comprehensive effect on associated neurological disorders, and protects retinal ganglion cells. Clinical studies demonstrate efficiency of nicotinoyl gamma-aminobutyric acid with regard to stabilization of visual functions, improvement of hemodynamic parameters and management of psychoneurological symptoms in GON patients. The combined mechanism of action (including nootropic, neuroprotective, antioxidant, vasoactive, antiplatelet, psychostimulant and anxiolytic effects), as well as a favorable safety profile make this drug a promising option for adjuvant therapy in patients with glaucoma optic neuropathy. This opens up new opportunities in implementation of a personalized approach in management of this severe neurodegenerative disease. Abstract
