Economic, social, strategic and technological benefits of open source identity systems
This paper presents a scoping review of the economic, technological, social, and strategic benefits of open-source digital identity architectures. Through thematic analysis of interdisciplinary literature, this study identifies how open standards, modular design, and public codebases advance interoperability, security, and user autonomy while reducing deployment costs and vendor dependency. This review critically examines the role of open-source systems in promoting digital inclusion, data sovereignty, and institutional legitimacy, particularly in low-resource and legally pluralistic contexts.
