A Narrative Overview of Vitamin C: Roles in Well-being and Disease

Abstract: Vitamin C is an important micronutrient that is required for numerous physiological processes and human health. The function of vitamin C in human biology is vital for collagen biosynthesis, antioxidant defense, and immune modulation. It reduces oxidative stress associated with cardiovascular disease and cancer by neutralizing reactive oxygen species and regenerating antioxidants. Vitamin C is also important for immune cell function and epithelial barrier integrity. This review offers a perspective on vitamin C as a preventive agent against chronic diseases like hypertension, coronary artery disease, and cancers. It emphasizes the need for further research for infection management and therapeutic use. The review also discusses optimal dosing, bioavailability, and safety. Current recommendations are for sufficient dietary intake, but more research is needed. In conclusion, while the importance of vitamin C in maintaining health cannot be disputed, more and more data must be accumulated to clarify its therapeutic limits and to optimize clinical applications and establish standard operating procedures. This review advocates for a balanced approach, prioritizing dietary sufficiency while exploring targeted therapeutic strategies through robust clinical investigations.
