Eco-Biology and Behavioral Aspects of Black-Winged Stilt: A Review
Black-winged stilt (BWS) is included among the shorebird category, which inhabits the wetland habitat primarily. It feeds upon invertebrate animals especially aquatic insects and their larvae.Stilts are monogamous birds, both parents actively participate in parental care activities such as incubation, protection, and chick rearing.Prey preference of Black-winged stilt can also vary on the basis of areas which they inhabit.Clutch size of Blackwinged stilt ranges in-between one to five eggs but clutch size of four eggs is more frequently observed.Breeding season is generally between March to May but it may vary along with the geographical regions.Black-winged stilt actively protects its territory from predators and other possible threats. It generally builds nests on the islets in aquatic habitat for the safety purpose but on the contrary the rise in water level sometimes induces the direct threat to the nest and eggs.
