Certain diseases, such as strains, sprains, osteoarthritis, intervertebral disc prolapse, and disc degeneration, are significant contributors to low back pain. Panchakarma therapy is now playing a crucial role in providing a cure for numerous diseases related to the lower back area. In Ayurveda, Vata Dosha is chiefly responsible for the proper functioning of the lower part of the body. The lower part of the body is the seat of Vata Dosha. Snehana Chikitsa is advocated for the alleviation of Vata Dosha, and Kati Basti is a type of local Snehana, hence, Kati Basti is beneficial for pain in the lower body. Kati Basti is done by application of a Basti, here Basti means a cavity, may be circular, rectangular or any other shape, and it is prepared on the Kati Pradesha (lumber or lumbosacral region). Retention of the lukewarm oil on the Kati Pradesha for some duration by this procedure is known as Kati Basti. Kati Basti reduces pain and inflammation and also causing lubrication and softening of the body tissue. Sesame Oil is used predominantly for the process of Kati Basti. The main objective of this article is to highlight the concept of Kati Basti as depicted in Ayurveda. Kati Basti is emerging as a new Ayurvedic treatment in alleviating lower back pain and related disorders.
