Analysis of ocular biometry parameters of cataract surgery candidates in Asahan regency, Indonesia

Introduction: Cataracts continue to be the most common cause of blindness worldwide. In Indonesia, untreated cataract cases are highly prevalent. However, there are no published data regarding ocular biometry parameters in Asahan Regency. This study aims to describe the demographic characteristics and analyze the ocular biometry parameters of cataract surgery candidates at Bunda Mulia Hospital, Asahan. Methods: This was a retrospective, descriptive cross-sectional study based on medical records of patients with cataracts who underwent pre-operative biometry at Bunda Mulia Hospital between January and June 2025. Data from patients with complete medical records were included, and extracted variables were age, sex, visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP), mean keratometry (K), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), axial length (LT), and intraocular lens (IOL) power. Results: A total of 120 eyes were analyzed. The mean age of participants was 63.8 ± 8.07 years, with no significant differences between sexes. Deeper ACD and longer AL were found in males, whereas steeper keratometry values were found in females.. ACD correlated positively with AL (r = 0.43, p < 0.001), while negative correlations were observed between age and ACD, K and AL, LT, and ACD. (all p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study reported sex-related differences and significant correlations among ocular biometry parameters in cataract patients. These findings represent the first reference data from Asahan Regency and may aid ophthalmologists in planning cataract surgeries for the local population.
