Psychosocial Effects of Mastectomy on Breast Cancer Patients: Insights from the EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR45
Introduction: Breast cancer treatment, particularly mastectomy, significantly impacts patients’ quality of life. This study aimed to assess the changes in the quality of life of breast cancer patients before and after mastectomy, using the EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR45 questionnaires. Methods: A cohort of 30 women diagnosed with stage III breast cancer at Dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital was followed, with assessments conducted pre- and post-surgery. Result: The results indicated significant improvements in emotional functioning and reductions in pain and insomnia, highlighting the potential psychological relief provided by mastectomy. However, significant deterioration was observed in body image, sexual function, and overall quality of life. The findings suggest that while mastectomy may alleviate some symptoms, it presents complex challenges related to body image and emotional health. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the need for holistic post-operative care, including psychological support and counseling, to help patients cope with the multifaceted impacts of the surgery. These results contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the psychosocial effects of mastectomy and suggest areas for future research, including the role of breast reconstruction and post-surgery interventions in improving patients’ quality of life.
