Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) pada pasien Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) dengan nyeri neuropatik

Introduction: Problems related to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection have become a global concern as an infectious disease that infected 36.9 million patients in 2015. Neuropathic pain is one of the neurological complications that often occurs in patients with HIV infection. Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a neurotrophic growth factor that is essential in the development and function of the nervous system, has been identified as a potential biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of neuropathic pain in HIV patients. This review discusses in more detail the relationship between BDNF and neuropathic pain in HIV patients. Methods: This article was created using the literature review method with information extracted from credible journals retrieved until November 2024. Data is presented descriptively into a literature review. Results: BDNF is a growth factor that plays an important role in the regeneration and repair of the nervous system. Patients with neuropathic pain will try to accelerate the repair of the nervous system so that this response increases serum BDNF levels. Previous studies related to neuropathic pain showed that serum BDNF levels increased significantly in patients with diabetic neuropathic pain (DNP) (OR = 1.2, 95%CI = 1.10-1.31, p = 0.002). These results are also supported by studies showing that serum BDNF is positively correlated with Total Neuropathic Score (TNSr) (r = 0.60, p = 0.0001) Conclusion: BDNF can be a potential biomarker in predicting neuropathic pain conditions in HIV patients.
