Conventional radiological perspective on bronchopulmonary dysplasia: A case series
Introduction: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most common cause of chronic respiratory failure in pediatric patients. Besides physical examination, current imaging modalities still have a significant role in diagnosing BPD. This case series describes the role of conventional radiological photos in diagnosing BPD. Case description: There were 3 cases of preterm babies with BPD with apparent signs of breathing difficulties. On the conventional radiology photo, all cases show a reticulogranular pattern throughout the right and left lung fields, suggested as a hyaline membrane disease. Case two shows fibrosis of the right and left lung and grade II pneumatosis intestinalis. Case three shows multiple cystic lesions with fibrosis, suggesting bronchopulmonary dysplasia and visible dilatation of the small intestinal system, which can be the beginning of NEC. Conclusion: Conventional radiography is essential in establishing a diagnosis of BPD, although it requires clinical support and more sophisticated examinations.
