Hypokalemia in acute myeloid leukemia: a case report

Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is one of the most common hematologic malignancies among adults, accounting for approximately 80% of all hematologic malignancies. It is characteristic of a massive expansion of immature blasts in the myeloid series. Several complications have been reported due to AML. This study aims to report a case of hypokalemia in AML. Case presentation: A 21-year-old adult female with a history of AML was admitted to the hospital with the chief complaint of muscle weakness two weeks before admission. The potassium level varies from 1.9 to 3.36 mmol/L. According to the trans tubular potassium gradient (TTKG) and urine osmolarity level, the patient is diagnosed with type-2 renal tubular acidosis. The patient was treated with potassium chloride intravenous to achieve the potassium level. Conclusion: An adult female patient with AML was diagnosed with renal loss hypokalemia due to type-2 renal tubular acidosis.
