Long-acting amylin agonist as a novel therapeutic agent in diabetes mellitus and obesity: A literature review
Link Video Abstract: https://youtu.be/Vv69GxVgJpY Background: Obesity is an escalating metabolic issue linked to cardiovascular disease and mortality. Experts are vying to create innovative and promising solutions to tackle this issue. Amylin, a peptide released alongside insulin, has been recognized for its appetite-suppressing properties. This literature review aims to explore long-acting amylin agonists as a new treatment option for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity. Methods: PubMed and Google Scholar library searches up to 31 January, 2025, were done using keywords and index terms related to long-acting amylin agonist, obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Moreover, all the screened and included articles are in English. Result: Long-acting amylin agonist exerts its effects by centrally decreasing hunger, decelerating gastrointestinal motility, and stimulating glucagon production. Numerous animal and clinical investigations demonstrated that long-acting amylin agonists decreased body weight and blood glucose levels. Conclusion: Long-acting amylin agonist is a viable contender for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity.
