Incidence of deep vein thrombosis in acute ischemic stroke patients at the Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan

Link of Video Abstract: https://youtu.be/0fQorpQnQ0E Introduction: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) often occurs in patients with stroke. This is thought to originate from immobilization and infection during hospital treatment. Approximately 11.5% of patients with stroke experienced asymptomatic DVT and 85.9% of thrombus were detected in the distal veins. It is important to evaluate the incidence of DVT in patients with acute ischemic stroke in order to alert clinicians to the possibility of complications so as to prevent the risk of morbidity and mortality in patients. Methods: This study was a descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. Inclusion criteria include patients with acute ischemic stroke with onset ≤ 10 days from May to August 2023. Exclusion criteria include patients with a history of using anti-thrombolytic drugs, a history of lower limb surgery < 12 weeks, sepsis, recurrent ischemic stroke, pregnancy, malignancy, and chronic disease. All patients who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria will undergo a Doppler ultrasound. Patients with a normal Doppler ultrasound result will have a repeat examination after 3 days to assess the emergence of DVT, considering the high risk of developing DVT in the study population The data was analyzed using a computer in the form of the SPSS statistical application. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Results: This study consisted of 32 research subjects with the majority aged over 50 years (90.6%), male (65.6%), in the normal weight category (81.3%), duration of treatment 1-3 days (56.3% ), and the majority were declared cured (59.4%). Of the acute ischemic stroke sufferers who experienced DVT, a total of 32 subjects, 26 subjects showed positive results for DVT, while 11 subjects (18.8%) showed negative results. Conclusion: The overall incidence of DVT in patients with acute ischemic stroke was 81.3%.
