Bridging the gap: Education, nutrition, and community action against iron deficiency
Introduction: Iron deficiency remains a global health issue, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Iron deficiency is a major cause of anemia, particularly in women, children, and other vulnerable groups. A low hemoglobin level in anemia hinders oxygen and nutritional transfer throughout the body, impacting physical and cognitive development. This paper discusses the strategies in preventing iron deficiency. Methods: Article search was conducted using PubMed to obtain relevant trials and observational studies. The included articles were discussed with narrative approach, highlighting the benefits and challenges in the iron deficiency prevention strategies. Results: Addressing iron deficiency requires the integration of nutritional, educational, and community engagement. Existing trials suggested that nutritional strategies, including iron supplementation and iron-fortified meals, were generally effective in enhancing iron-related paramters among susceptible groups. The efficacy of these highly depends on intake adherence, which should be enhanced through educational programs with the community’s involvement. Conclusion: Education and community involvement positively impacted in awareness, knowledge level, and adherence to iron supplementation and overall health behaviors. Government, healthcare professionals, and the community should collaborate to ensure the success of the intervention to achieve iron sufficiency in a broader scope.
