Correlation between cumulative fluid balance and SOFA score in sepsis patients in the Intensive Care Unit of H. Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan, Indonesia

Introduction: Millions of individuals worldwide suffer from sepsis and septic shock each year, and one in three to one in six of them pass away from these severe conditions. Similar to prescribing other medications, intravenous fluid administration has been used for a long time and is considered a pharmacological therapy for patients with sepsis. As such, it must be done sensibly and carefully in accordance with the indications and while considering side effects. For this cross-sectional, analytical investigation, which aims to ascertain the relationship between cumulative fluid balance and SOFA score in sepsis patients in the HAM Intensive Care Unit. Method: This research is an analytical study with a cross-sectional design. Participants were selected using a sequential sampling approach. The study included 110 patients as samples. patients diagnosed with sepsis, patients on ventilators and patients on vasopressors. Correlation test was used to evaluate cumulative balanced in relation to SOFA score. All value considered significant if p<0.05. Result: The results of the statistical calculations indicated that the cumulative balance on day 1 had an impact on the SOFA score of less than 6 days, the SOFA score of more than 6 days, the bilirubin of less than 6 days, the bilirubin of more than 6 days, the creatinine of more than 6 days, and the cumulative balance on day 1 (p<0.05). Nevertheless, neither the SOFA score of fewer than six days nor the SOFA score of more than six days was impacted by the cumulative balance of days four and six (p>0.05). Conclusion: Cumulative fluid balance and SOFA score are correlated in sepsis patients treated in the critical care unit at H. Adam Malik Hospital in Medan. In sepsis patients receiving intensive care unit treatment at H. Adam Malik Hospital in Medan, there is a correlation between cumulative fluid balance and SOFA score. The cumulative fluid balance data for days 1, 4, and 6 and the SOFA score recap for less than and more than six days shown a strong correlation.
