11 Assessing the role of livestock in a circular bioeconomy.
Abstract The simultaneously synergistic and conflating relationships between efficiency and environmental footprint in livestock bioeconomy systems have demanded increasingly new approaches to deliver the food systems of our future. Circularity in livestock bioeconomy systems is seen as a possible approach to meet the input and output demands of our livestock bioeconomy systems, but requires the use of holistic metrics to recognize the potential benefits and drawbacks of this production method. In this presentation, we will explore the concept of holistic metrics and their application in understanding the impacts of circular bioeconomy systems. We will then investigate the implications of implementing circular technologies within livestock bioeconomy systems and the possible rebound effects on the system’s efficiency and environmental footprint.
