MANAGEMENT OF VARICOSE ULCER BY JALAUKAVACHARANA : AN AYURVEDA PARASURGICAL PROCEDURE: A CASE REPORT
Background: A varicose ulcer, also known as a venous ulcer or venous stasis ulcer, is a slow-healing open sore that develops on the skin, typically on the lower leg and around the ankle, due to problems with blood flow in the veins. These ulcers are a complication of chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins, where the valves in the veins don't function properly, leading to blood pooling and increased pressure. The treatment involves wound Care, com-pression therapy, Leg Elevation, and medications, such as pain relievers and antibiotics. In some cases, surgery may be needed to address underlying vein problems. Objectives: The following work was done to evaluate the role of Jalaukavacharana (leech therapy) as an effec-tive alternative to surgery for the complete healing of varicose ulcers. Materials and Methods: The antibacterial property present in Triphala Kwatha supported the conversion of an Ashuddha Vrana (infected wound) to a Shuddha Vrana (healing wound). Then, Jalaukavacharana was per-formed to accelerate oxygen and nutrient perfusion to the wound site, promoting early healing of the ulcer. Observations and results: The ulcer converted from Ashuddha Vrana (infected wound) to Shuddha Vrana (healing wound). Jalaukavacharana then accelerated tissue perfusion, providing oxygen and nutrients to the tis-sues and promoting early healing of the chronic, non-healing ulcer. Conclusion: Jalaukavacharana was successful in promoting the early healing of varicose ulcers, thus avoiding the necessity of skin grafts or any other surgical procedures for complete wound healing.
