INFLUENCE OF AYURVEDIC PRAKRITI ON PULMONARY FUNCTION IN OBESE INDIVIDUALS: INSIGHTS FROM A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY
Obesity is a growing global health concern associated with various respiratory complications, such as impaired pulmonary function. Ayurveda classifies individuals into three Prakriti (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) based on their unique physiological and psychological characteristics. This study investigates the relationship between Prakriti and pulmonary function in obese individuals. AIM: This study aimed to examine the relationship between Prakriti and pulmonary function in obese individu-als. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 30 obese individuals (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²). Each participant’s Prakriti was assessed using the CCRAS Prakriti assessment tool. Pulmonary func-tion was measured through spirometry, assessing FEV1 and FVC. The lung function parameters were then com-pared across prakriti types to determine any association between Dosha dominance and pulmonary function in obese individuals. RESULTS and DISCUSSION: Participants with Vata-dominant Prakriti exhibited significantly lower FEV1 and FVC values compared to those with Pitta or Kapha dominance. The severity of obesity further exacerbated lung function impairment in Vata individuals. Kapha individuals, despite higher BMI, relatively have better lung function, indicating that Prakriti may influence susceptibility to obesity-related respiratory complications. This impairment is likely due to the inherent characteristics of Vata, such as dryness and sensitivity to environmental factors, which may predispose them to respiratory issues. CONCLUSION: Individuals with Vata-dominant prakriti may be at higher risk for obesity-related lung function impairments. Understanding the role of Prakriti in respiratory health can inform personalised preventive and therapeutic strategies for managing obesity-related respiratory complications.
