PREPARATION AND STANDARDISATION OF PURANDAR VATI: A CLASSICALKHALVIYA RASAYANA FOR KASA AND SHWASA

Background: Purandar Vati is a classical Ayurvedic formulation indicated in respiratory and digestive disorders, particularly Kasa and Shwasa. This study aimed to prepare and standardise the formulation using traditional Ayurvedic pharmaceutical methods in conjunction with modern analytical techniques. Method: Raw materials, including Parada (mercury) and Gandhaka (sulphur), were subjected to classical Shodhana (purification). Kajjali was prepared and compounded with Triphala, Trikatu, and Aja Kshira (goat’s milk) to form tablets. The formulation was prepared in three batches, and each batch underwent systematic evaluation. Standardisation included organoleptic assessment, physicochemical parameters, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC). Results: Post-shodhana XRF confirmed enhanced elemental purity of mercury and sulphur. All three batches demonstrated consistent organoleptic and physicochemical characteristics, with reproducible TLC profiles, indicating uniformity and stability of the formulation. Conclusion: Purandar Vati was successfully prepared and standardised across three batches, confirming the reliability, safety, and reproducibility of the classical Rasashastra-based formulation when integrated with modern quality control tools.
