A comprehensive framework for higher education 4.0

Industry 4.0 has initiated paradigmatic shifts in industries, and higher education is no exception. However, the concept of "Higher Education 4.0" remains somewhat ambiguous. To clarify its limitations, this research analyzes 41 peer-reviewed articles retrieved from the Web of Science and Scopus that were published between 2011 and 2024. Through a conceptual analysis approach, our findings reveal seven main dimensions that characterize higher education 4.0: competencies, pedagogy, technology-based education, infrastructure, governance and management factors, sociocultural and ethical considerations, and research and partnerships. Specifically, the results show that the successful execution of higher education 4.0 calls for developing competencies beyond technical skills; embracing student-centered pedagogical approaches; integrating emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), big data, robotics, cloud computing, and IoT; establishing appropriate physical and digital infrastructure; adopting effective management practices; addressing sociocultural and ethical issues; and fostering research and collaborative ecosystems with partners. Therefore, this framework offers an understanding of higher education 4.0 that extends beyond just technological dominance. This study provides a comprehensive reference that can guide higher education institutions and decision-makers in bridging the gap between theory and practice when designing future-ready educational strategies aligned with the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
