Candida
Invasive candidiasis is a serious and life-threatening disease in thoracic organ transplant recipients. Candida can transition from colonizer to opportunistic pathogen quickly in these hosts. This review explores the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of invasive candidiasis in thoracic organ transplant recipients. We focus on the various manifestations of invasive candidiasis, including candidemia, endobronchial and anastomotic infections, pleural space infections, mediastinitis, and sternal osteomyelitis. We also discuss current therapeutic approaches, the challenges in managing these infections, and the emerging threat of resistant Candida species in this patient population.
