Structural performance of multi-storied buildings with time history analysis using fluid viscous damper
Being a major hazard to the life and property of people, seismic design is one of the main criteria of structural design. This study discusses how the time history analysis is applied to seismic performance of multi-storey structures with and without fluid viscous dampers (FVDs). This analysis was done in ETABS software, through time history analysis. The study investigates multi-storey structures for testing the beneficial effects of FVDs in reducing earthquake-induced forces. Significant reduction in both storey shear and lateral displacement was achieved for structures with FVDs, thus providing evidence that they are very effective at increasing seismic resilience. These dampers dissipate seismic energy so as to minimise structural deformations and force transfer to the building framework. It is found that the FVDs are significant to the safety and stability of high-rise buildings, particularly in earthquake-prone countries. The integration of FVDs into building design addresses a fundamental vulnerability of traditional structures, enabling engineers to develop safer and more resilient structures for seismic conditions to withstand that would ultimately lead to a reduction in risk, life, and property loss in the seismic regions.
