Quasi‐Perforated Plywood Architecture Membrane Based on 2D Porous Material for Molecular Sieving

Abstract Membrane technology holds promise for reducing the energy consumption and process complexity associated with various separations, yet fabricating membranes with precise separation ability, high permeability, and mechanical endurance still remains challenging. In this work, an ultrathin quasi‐perforated plywood architecture membrane (QPAM) is developed, fabricated by pasting two‐dimensional porous metal‐organic framework (MOF) nanosheets with trace polyethyleneimine (PEI) via a centrifugal‐assisted self‐assembly approach. The in‐plane alignment of MOF nanosheets provides regular and continuous molecular sieving channels, while the PEI in the interlayer acts as “molecular binder” to enhance the stability of the nanosheet framework as well as the membrane mechanical strength. The resulting membrane achieves a high water permeance over 1000 L m −2 h −1 MPa −1 and superior molecular sieving ability (eg. a dye/dye separation factor of 1549), far beyond the state‐of‐the‐art membranes. Furthermore, the QPAM exhibits robust separation performance over 600‐h even after 4‐years of storage, demonstrating an excellent mechanical endurance. QPAM can be rationally designed to realize the tailor‐made high‐performance membrane according to diverse separation requisites.
