MEDICAL AND SOCIAL PROFILE OF AN ADULT PATIENT WITH FUNCTIONAL DYSPEPSIA

Significance. Functional dyspepsia is one of the most frequently diagnosed functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, exerting a significant impact on patient daily activities and quality of life. Despite its widespread, the effectiveness of treatment remains low. This is largely due to insufficient implementation of interdisciplinary approaches to care delivery and an underestimation of psychosocial factors contributing to symptom chronicity. Purpose. To present a comprehensive medical and social profile of an adult patient suffering from functional dyspepsia. Material and methods. A non-interventional observational study was conducted among 192 patients with suspected functional dyspepsia who sought outpatient care between 2022 and 2024. After clinical confirmation of the diagnosis using the Rome IV criteria, 87 patients were included in the final sample. Data collection focused on demographic characteristics, lifestyle, nutrition, income level, treatment adherence, and health-related quality of life assessed through the SF-36 questionnaire. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics and the Student’s t-test. Results. Patients with functional dyspepsia were predominantly characterized by low physical activity, poor dietary habits, unfavorable social conditions, and reduced adherence to treatment. A marked decline in quality-of-life indicators was observed over a 12-month follow-up period, particularly in the psychological health domains. Less than 20% of the participants reported any improvement in symptoms. Conclusion. Improving the effectiveness of treatment for functional dyspepsia requires an active implementation of the interdisciplinary approach involving specialists in psychotherapy and social support. Scope of Application. The findings can be applied to optimize clinical management strategies for patients with functional dyspepsia at the primary healthcare level. They are also relevant for the development of psychosocial support programs and postgraduate training of general practitioners and gastroenterologists. Keywords: functional dyspepsia; quality of life; primary healthcare; psychosocial factors; treatment.
