Correction for Wurman et al., Supercell tornadoes are much stronger and wider than damage-based ratings indicate
The authors note: "There was an error in the formula for the correction of the unobserved component of wind velocity.sin() should read (1-cos())."Starting on page six, left column, seventh full paragraph, the text should instead appear as "For tornadoes propagating at any appreciable angle to the radar beams, the unobserved component of the wind velocity vector, V p (1-cos()) where is the angle between V p and the radar-beam pointing angle, is significant. To account for this, V gmax = V da + V p (1-cos()).The median V p is 10 m s -1 at the time of maximum intensity, with an extreme of 25 m s -1 consistent with that found in individual case studies. The corrections applied to V d through this process are usually substantially less than V p due to multiplication by (1-cos()).As stated above, no correction is applied to data collected while the DOWs are mobile unless precise navigation is available, or if V p or (1-cos()) are not known with confidence, due to uncertain DOW angular navigation or limited duration of observations."
