Challenges facing universities in achieving sustainable development goals for “quality education”: a case study of faculty members at the university of Jordan

Objective The study aims to identify the challenges that universities face in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) related to quality education, from the perspective of faculty members at the University of Jordan. Methodology The study used a descriptive, analytical and comparative approach to align with the objectives related to the challenges faced by universities in attaining SDGs for quality education, as seen through the eyes of faculty members at the University of Jordan. Study Sample The study sample consisted of 230 faculty members at the University of Jordan, selected using a stratified intentional sampling method. Study Tool Data was collected using a scale designed to assess the challenges that universities encounter in achieving the SDGs for quality education, based on the perspectives of faculty members at the University of Jordan. The instrument comprised two main focus areas. Results Results indicate a high level of commitment from Jordanian universities in achieving SDGs concerning quality education. However, the challenges encountered are significant, with the most critical issues being the lack of coordination among faculty members at both the college and university levels aimed at enhancing the educational process, as well as a lack of awareness among university students regarding the importance of educational development. Key Recommendations To enhance the achievement of sustainable development – particularly the goal of quality education – within Jordanian universities, it is essential to foster a supportive university environment that encourages student innovation and skill development through internal programs and activities. Furthermore, addressing institutional challenges requires effective collaboration between faculty members, students and university administration. Equally important is raising awareness among faculty members regarding the importance of sustainable development and actively involving them in national and international conferences and initiatives related to education and sustainability.
