Design, fabrication, and testing of a coconut dehusking machine addressing labor reduction, process standardization, and energy optimization.
Coconuts are among the most economically valuable crops in tropical regions, yet the dehusking process remains one of the most labor-intensive stages in their utilization.Traditional manual dehusking is not only time-consuming but also physically demanding and hazardous, often resulting in injuries due to the sharp tools used. This creates a pressing need for mechanized solutions that reduce dependence on human labor while ensuring consistent output and enhanced safety standards.Although mechanization in coconut processing has gained attention in recent years, many existing machines are either energy-inefficient, costly, or fail to address varying husk thicknesses and nut sizes. This study presents the design, fabrication, and testing of a coconut dehusking machine specifically engineered to optimize labor reduction, process standardization, and energy efficiency. The machine was conceptualized using mechanical design principles with emphasis on ergonomic operation, safety features, and material durability.Key components, including the dehusking blades, frame, and power transmission system, were fabricated using locally available materials to ensure cost-effectiveness and maintainability.Testing involved evaluating throughput capacity, energy consumption, dehusking efficiency, and operator safety under different operational conditions. Results demonstrated significant improvements over manual methods, achieving faster processing times, reduced physical exertion, and lower energy demands compared to conventional semi-automatic models. The standardized operation minimized variability in husk removal, ensuring consistency across diverse coconut sizes. The developed machine contributes to sustainable agro-mechanization by providing a practical, affordable, and scalable solution. Its design principles can further support rural agribusiness, enhance profitability, and reduce occupational risks in coconut farming communities.
