The Productive House : Life at Home in the 21st Century

There is a misalignment between the lifestyle of contemporary families and modern notions of domesticity, which is derived from the sole-breadwinner family model where one spouse works outside, leaving the house to be the exclusive domain of the caretaker. However, remote work at home is predicted to be the defining disruption to 21st-century work, resulting in a dwelling model in which the family lives and works in one sphere. Furthermore, given the rise of the dual-income household and the emphasis on postsecondary education, every family member is expected to engage in some form of work at home. A design exploration for the next evolution of the suburban house typology and an alternative approach to suburban density is presented by this thesis as an opportunity to speculate how the house and urban planning will adapt to support the contemporary family as society redefines domesticity to include productive work.
