Petrophysical and seismic inversion analysis for reservoir characterization of the B-interval, Lower Goru Formation, Miano Area, Central Indus Basin, Pakistan

Abstract Exploring and exploiting hydrocarbon reservoirs is inherently challenging, particularly in terms of interpreting seismic data and understanding the complex characteristics of reservoir rocks. This highlights the importance of a comprehensive methodology that integrates geological and geophysical insights. In this study, we used a multifaceted approach to interpret 2D seismic lines and identified four principal horizons in the Miano Gas Field, Pakistan: (i) the Ranikot Formation, (ii) Lower Goru Top, (iii) C-Interval, and (iv) B-interval, with the B-interval serving as the primary reservoir. We generated two-way time and depth contour maps to reveal spatial variability within the study area. From these maps, we delineated prospective hydrocarbon leads, which are visually emphasized with yellow-filled polygons. Unlike previous studies, we integrated petrophysical and facies analyses of the Miano-09 well, achieving a more precise reservoir characterization. In addition, combined model-based and sparse-spike inversion analysis revealed a significant lithological transition, confirming the seal rock. This approach also enables more reliable porosity prediction and enhances reservoir characterization away from well locations. The integrated framework refines predictions and improves the identification of hydrocarbon prospects in the Miano area, offering valuable insights for future regional exploration and field investigations.
