Simulation and Modeling of Mass Transfer in Packed Absorption Columns for the Acetone-Water System: A Review
The emission of volatile organic compounds such as acetone from industrial processes poses significant environmental and public health risks. Addressing these risks requires optimizing removal technologies, particularly absorption columns. This literature review examines the simulation and modeling of absorption columns, with a focus on the acetone-water system and associated mass transfer phenomena. Relevant studies from specialized scientific sources were critically analyzed and synthesized. The review finds that most academic research centers on carbon dioxide systems and sustainable amine solvents. In contrast, studies on acetone-water systems in packed columns present experimental limitations and are little explored computationally. The analysis further notes the prevalent use of commercial simulators and computational fluid dynamics. However, these tools often lack rigorous experimental validation, while promising integration of machine learning techniques is observed. Advancing the field will require research that integrates computational modeling with targeted experimental data to optimize separation processes for industrial use both technically and economically.
