Academic Delay of Gratification: Self‐Regulated Learning Research Among Undergraduate Indian Students

ABSTRACT This chapter provides an overview of the origin and development of academic delay of gratification, a key variable of self‐regulated learning, in various cultural settings, including India. The aim is to highlight the importance of academic delay of gratification in the classroom and its predictive value for various positive learning outcomes among undergraduate students from different disciplines, who aspire to become autonomous learners and how it can counteract the negative effects of instant gratification prevalent among generation Z students due to their excessive use of social media and other distractions. The chapter urges educators to foster this essential academic variable among their students. The educational implications and the future research directions in the Indian context are also addressed.
