Effect of rare‐earth ion substitution on structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of GdCrO 3 orthochromites

Abstract A detailed investigation of the structure, cryogenic magnetic properties, and magnetocaloric performances of Gd 0.5 R 0.5 CrO 3 (R = Dy, Ho, and Er) perovskites has been presented. The phase purity of the compounds was examined by the x‐ray diffraction. The Néel transition temperature was found 154, 149, and 144 K for compounds with R = Dy, Ho, and Er, respectively. Gd 0.5 Dy 0.5 CrO 3 compound exhibits the magnetization reversal behavior at an applied magnetic field of 0.01 T. The magnetic entropy change (−Δ S ) reaches a maximum value of 28.79, 27.56, and 26.78 J/kg K at 7.5 K with a maximum magnetic field of 8 T for compounds with R = Dy, Ho, and Er, respectively. Correspondingly, the relative cooling power attains values 604.15, 605.82, and 597.73 J/kg, respectively. These findings advocate that the Gd 0.5 R 0.5 CrO 3 (R = Dy, Ho, and Er) compounds exhibit promising magnetocaloric properties for magnetic refrigeration in cryogenic temperature range.
