Low Elevation Winter Record of a Great Gray Owl in Redding, California
Great Gray Owls (Strix nebulosa) in California rarely occur outside their typical montane habitats. Therefore, the observation of one on the Central Valley in Redding (Shasta County), was remarkable. This individual was found 19 January 2022 and seen and photographed by multiple observers, providing the first documented record of the species for Shasta County and a first for the Central Valley floor.
