Indicação geográfica como garantia para o desenvolvimento sustentável – Um estudo de caso Brasil e Portugal

This article addresses a set of themes that relate intellectual property as a strategy for sustainable development and the guarantee of traditional products. In the context of territorial development and environmental sustainability, can Geographical Indications (GIs) of traditional food products represent an aggregation in the context of the transversality of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? In this condition, this research sought to evaluate the main factors of valuing a product with the implementation of Geographical Indication (GI) concerning sustainable development issues and the traditional artisanal production process. Investigating the convergent points of sustainability in Brazilian geographical indications and Portuguese protected geographical indications. These needs lead us to think about the problematic relationships between production and the environment and ways to reduce the tension caused by industrial products. Therefore, the research presented the relationship of the sustainable development goals in the context of GI, related to the relevant and convergent points of the sustainable production of traditional products. To support the analysis, two relational contexts of case studies were used as a methodology with the purpose of evaluating and summing up future actions. For this purpose, a comparative panel was created between the two case studies evaluating the main actions involving the environment, economic and social actions, thus creating a new concept with the sums of the main sustainable actions, and thus presenting the positive points to be implemented in the geographical indications in meeting the SDGs. In this sense, this research found that the production of traditional products, concerning the economic and social guarantee of products and producers, can present great benefits with intellectual property, in this case with GI.
