Gestational diabetes mellitus: course and adverse outcomes of pregnancy exemplified by the clinical case
Currently, the analysis of the course and outcomes of pregnancy against the background of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is attracting increasing attention of scientific researchers and practicing physicians. GDM is a disease characterized by hyperglycemia, first detected during pregnancy, but not corresponding to the criteria of manifest diabetes mellitus. Decompensation of GDM can often cause perinatal mortality. With GDM, preeclampsia and eclampsia develop more often, which requires emergency delivery by cesarean section. A modern approach to the management of GDM includes the need to achieve target blood glucose values during pregnancy. Prevention of the development of adverse outcomes for both mother and child is careful pregnancy planning against the background of normoglycemia and further achievement of target glucose values during pregnancy. Prevention of the development of adverse outcomes for both mother and child is careful pregnancy planning against the background of normoglycemia and further achievement of target glucose values during pregnancy. Self-monitoring of blood glucose is widely used in diabetes of any type, including GDM, while an important point in self-monitoring of glycemia is the correct choice of a glucometer, which reduces the likelihood of errors. 4–12 weeks after delivery, the disease is reclassified to assess the degree of carbohydrate metabolism disorder. A clinical case of the course and unfavorable outcome of pregnancy in a patient with GDM in the absence of achieving target glycemia levels during pregnancy is presented.
